New boiler installation in Kingstanding, Perry Barr and Great Barr. Combi swaps and back boiler replacements for the inter-war semis of north Birmingham.
The most common job on the estate: an old combi out, a new one in, usually in a day.
Back boilers and gas fires taken out and a modern wall-hung boiler fitted.
Old hot water cylinders removed and the airing cupboard handed back as storage.
Flues brought up to current rules, and condensate pipes routed so they do not freeze.
A clean and a magnetic filter so the new boiler is not fed with old sludge.
Everything listed before the job is booked.
Yes, along with Erdington, Oscott and Handsworth. Send your postcode and we will confirm.
For most, yes. One bathroom and a standard number of radiators suits a combi well.
A straight combi swap is usually one day. Removing a back boiler or moving the boiler can take two or three.
It is taken away and disposed of properly as part of the job.
Not usually. They are checked, and only replaced if they are leaking or badly corroded.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.
Kingstanding was one of the largest council estates built in the country between the wars, and it still looks it: street after street of 1930s semis and short terraces around the Kingstanding Circle, with the same story repeated through Perry Barr and parts of Great Barr. Houses built at the same time end up with boilers fitted at the same time, and many of those combis are now old enough to be giving trouble.
For most of these houses a new combi is the straightforward answer. One bathroom, a modest number of radiators and a kitchen or utility wall where the boiler can live. The work is usually a day, and the airing cupboard is often freed up if an old cylinder is still there.
Where it gets more involved is the older installs. Some houses still have a back boiler behind a gas fire in the front room, which means removing both, dealing with the chimney opening and running new pipework to a new boiler position. Others have a flue that no longer meets the current rules, or a condensate pipe run that will freeze every winter unless it is rerouted.
Every quote follows a look at the house, and lists the boiler, the flue, the controls and any pipework changes, so the price you agree is the price you pay. The system is cleaned before the new boiler goes on so it starts its life on clean water.
If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
